Civil and Human Rights Activist, Brebner Changala, says the move to stop political cadres from offering solidarity during the Former President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility case ruling tomorrow, does not inspire in a democracy.
Yesterday, Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwimbu, warned that government had received some intelligence reports about people planning to engage in unruly behavior during the ruling but assured of heightened police presence with closure of some roads to that effect.
However, Mr. Changala said in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today that the statement from the Minister is an infringement of the constitutional rights of the Zambians.
He said the government is scared of the unknown but should not withdraw people’s rights.
Mr. Changala accused the UPND government of abandoning the core issues of promoting democracy that got them into power.
“The UPND are promoting what Zambians abhorre, the infringement of people’s rights,” said Mr. Changala.
And commenting on the same matter in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, opposition Economic Freedom Fighters Party President, Kasonde Mwenda, said leaders owe their allegiance to the constitution and not to their feelings.
Mr. Mwenda said there was no need for the Minister to lecture people on what they should attend and what they should not attend.
He said the constitution allows Zambians to gather and offer solidarity to whoever they want without being intimidated.
“The government right now are very wrong because the law is supreme,” said Mr. Mwenda.
