ALCOHOL ABUSE AMONG YOUNG PEOPLE WORRYING – TAFUNA

The Chainama Hills College Hospital has raised concerns over the rising substance abuse rates among young people struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

According to Chainama Hills College Hospital Psychotherapist and Mental Health Spokesperson, George Tafuna, approximately 22,700 patients sought treatment for substance abuse in 2023, with 56% of cases involving alcohol and drug abuse.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News  in Lusaka today, Dr. Tafuna reported that alcohol-related cases increased significantly in 2024, with the number of patients rising to 34,000.

“Parents must spend quality time with their children, guiding them and helping them develop into responsible and well-adjusted individuals to prevent alcohol abuse,” said Dr. Tafuna.

He further emphasized that civil society organizations and advocacy groups are not doing enough to address the growing substance abuse crisis among young people.
