Agriculture expert, Oliver Bulaya, has cautioned government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, against the unplanned export of maize.
This comes after Agriculture Minister Mtolo Phiri recently announced that Zambia has sufficient maize stocks for both human consumption and industrial use, following a bumper harvest recorded in the 2024/2025 farming season.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka today, Dr. Bulaya advised government to take a cautious and forward-thinking approach, especially in light of the unpredictable effects of climate change.
“The country may be food-secure this season, but the same may not be true in the next,” said Dr. Bulaya.
He urged government to use the current surplus as a strategic reserve to safeguard national food security in the event of future droughts or poor harvests.
