EXPECTANT MOTHERS URGED TO PRIORITIZE BLOOD GROUP TESTING

The Zambia Medical Association has emphasized the critical role of blood group testing in ensuring a safe and healthy pregnancy.

This emphasis comes as a reminder to expectant mothers to prioritize their health and that of their unborn child by being informed about their blood type and taking necessary precautions.

Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Association Secretary General, Oliver Kauma, stressed that while blood group screening is a routine antenatal test, its significance cannot be overlooked.

Dr. Kauma explained that knowing one’s blood type is essential for identifying potential compatibility issues between the mother and the foetus.

He highlighted the risks associated with Rhesus (Rh) factor incompatibility, which occurs when an Rh-negative mother carries an Rh-positive foetus.

“If a mother has a negative Rh factor and the foetus has a positive Rh factor, her immune system may produce antibodies that attack the foetus’s red blood cells,” said Dr. Kauma.

He warned that this condition, if undetected, can lead to complications in future pregnancies.

Dr. Kauma however reassured that early detection and timely medical intervention, such as the administration of Rh immunoglobulin, can prevent these complications and ensure a safer pregnancy journey.
