CHOLERA OUTBREAK NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED – MQHZ

The Medical Quality Healthcare Zambia (MQHZ) says the reported cholera outbreak in Chililabombwe district of the Copperbelt, needs immediate and         decisive attention.

MQHZ Director General, Quince Mwabu has urged government to take bold and decisive action to contain the outbreak such as deploying emergency response teams, providing adequate medical supplies, and implementing public awareness campaigns and the Ministry of Health must assume a leadership role in coordinating the response efforts, ensuring that all necessary measures are taken to prevent further spread.

In statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today, Dr. Mwabu said that the public must also assume responsibility for preventing the spread of cholera by adhering to stringent hygiene practices, reporting suspected cases, and supporting efforts to improve sanitation and water quality.

“Additional resources will be required to support the response efforts and its a call upon government and international partners to provide the necessary funding, personnel, and equipment’s including transparency and accountability which are essential,” said Dr. Mwabu.

He also added that the consequences of inaction are terrible, saying that Zambia cannot afford to lose more lives to Cholera.
