Agriculture Expert, Oliver Bulaya, has called on the need for relevant authorities to sensitise the famers about the importance of rainwater harvest especially amidst climate change.
Dr. Bulaya says that this will help farmers to be knowledgeable and see the importance of collecting and storing rainwater for later use especially in times of dry spells, in order to manage the agriculture sector.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News in Lusaka, Dr. Bulaya said that the move will not only help to reduce soil erosion but can be used for irrigation and enhance agriculture throughout the year hence the country will be food secured.
“The rainfed cropping has failed and irrigation is an alternative that can sustain the agriculture sector”, said Dr. Bulaya.
Meanwhile Dr. Bulaya has advised farmers to consider planting some legumes and early maturing seeds amid, the rains the country is receiving so as to cushion food security in the country.
