GOV’T URGES BROADER COLLABORATION TO TACKLE ILLEGAL ALCOHOL

Government has called for broader collaboration to address the widespread sale of illegal alcohol, commonly referred to as kachasu, within Lusaka’s Central Business District (CBD).

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Administration, Maambo Haamaundu says the production and distribution of illegal alcohol, especially in unhygienic conditions, poses a serious threat to public health and safety.

In his response to the concerns raised by the Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) on the proliferation of the illegal alcohol, Mr. Haamaundu said the production and sale of kachasu not only endangers public health but also undermines the laws and regulations designed to safeguard the communities hence the need for collective action.

“This is not a problem that the government can solve alone. We need the active participation of institutions like ZACA, civil society, and community members to combat this vice effectively,” said Mr. Haamaundu.

Mr. Haamaundu has since called for broader collaboration across various sectors, emphasizing that a unified approach is essential for lasting solutions.

He has further encouraged community members to report illegal activities related to kachasu to the relevant authorities.

He said this in a statement issued to RCV News by Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer Liseli Kanyanga.
