The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has attributed the recent drop in mealie meal prices to the country’s bumper maize harvest, which has led to a decline in maize prices.
MAZ President Andrew Chintala confirmed that prices of mealie meal have decreased by between K50 and K130, with the commodity now retailing at a high of K285 and a low of K230, depending on the brand and location.
Speaking in an interview with RCV News, Mr. Chintala said that several major milling companies have already adjusted their prices following the association’s directive.
“Some milling companies may still be selling at the old prices as they work through their existing stock and consumers should not view this as exploitation, but rather as a transition period,” said Mr. Chintala.
He further assured the public that as more millers finish offloading old stock, prices are expected to stabilize across the country in line with the current maize market conditions.
