The Civil Service Commission has announced the commencement of the third phase recruitment of the cholera volunteers which will see an additional 329 volunteers being employed in the public service.
The records indicate that 1,687 citizens volunteered as general workers whereas, 1,407 volunteered as health professionals bringing the total number of volunteers to 3,094 during the ended cholera outbreak.
Speaking at a Press Briefing in Lusaka today, Civil Service Commission Chairperson, Choolwe Beyani, said it is regrettable that this phase has taken slightly longer because the recruitment of cholera volunteers is premised on vacancies arising from natural attrition such as retirements, promotions, transfers, demises, resignations and separations, among others.
“Most of these factors cannot be expedited or predetermined hence the reference to them being that of natural attrition,” said Dr. Beyani.
He said after this recruitment, a total of 670 who volunteered as professional health workers and 85 as general workers will remain outstanding.
Dr. Beyani said the commission anticipates that these will be absorbed into the civil service through the treasury authority for the recruitment of 4,000 health workers by the close of 2024.
