Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya has called on leaders in all sectors of the country to work in unity to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, which he said has seen an increase  in new cases,  as well as in deaths in the recent weeks.

Dr. Chilufya says politicizing the Covid-19 fight will not help the country, adding that Zambia now has 2, 620 confirmed Covid-19 cases while the number of deaths has risen to 108,and that 22 people were on Oxygen support as of yesterday.

He said this when he gave a ministerial statement on Covid-19 in parliament today.

Dr. Chilufya urged citizens to rededicate themselves to the set health guidelines in the protection against Covid-19, adding that people should hold hands in solidarity to combat the disease.

He maintained that Covid-19 is not a hoax and encouraged people to keep warm in the current cold season.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chilufya urged stakeholders to hold all public gathering under strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.

He said government will be engaging the public on the status of Covid-19 and measures that will be given by President Edgar Lungu.

Dr. Chilufya was responding to Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo, who wanted to know why the opposition should not feel discriminated when they are stopped from having intra party elections, while those in the ruling party  conduct their business without adhering to Covid-19 guidelines.

As of today, Zambia has 190 new cases, 1434 recoveries, 108 deaths of which 84 of those are brought in dead at various health institutions.
