The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes SACCORD has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to consider undertaking legal reforms that address challenges contributing to factors that compromise the peace of the country.
According to the 2023 Global Peace Index, the average levels of country peacefulness deteriorated by 0.42% becoming the thirteenth time that such deterioration in levels of global peacefulness has been recorded in the last fifteen years.
SACCORD Executive Director Bornface Cheembe says there’s need for the country to pay close attention to indicators such as increase in incarceration rates and perceptions of criminality in ensuring continued maintenance of peace.
“Zambia has experienced a slight deterioration of peace in 2023 having moved from being ranked sixth most peaceful country in 2022 to the ninth most peaceful country in 2023”, said Mr. Cheembe.
