Opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) President, Kasonde Mwenda, has expressed concern over what he has termed lack of a specific timeline for debt restructuring negotiations between Zambia and the International Monetary Fund, (IMF).

Mr. Mwenda was reacting to a recent article by Reuters News Agency,  titled “Zambia says no timeline on debt restructuring, as IMF seeks compromise”, dated February 5, 2024.”

He said failure to establish a clear timeline leaves Zambia’s economic future hanging in the balance and demonstrates the UPND’s disregard for the well-being of the Zambian people.

“Zambia’s substantial external debt and limited fiscal space pose significant challenges, making it crucial to address the country’s debt obligations through sustainable solutions”, said Mr. Mwenda in a statement issued to RCV News in Lusaka today.

He said the absence of a fixed timeframe compromises the economy and prolongs the economic uncertainty faced by the citizens.
