The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) has called for strengthened efforts to fight money laundering and associated crimes in Zambia and in the region, saying these crimes have undesirable impacts on economic development.
BoZ Deputy Governor, Administration, Rekha Mhango said this during a workshop on Combating Money Laundering jointly organized by BoZ and the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI), held in Livingstone today.
Mrs. Mhango said the Bank, working together with Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), has played a key role in leading efforts to rid the financial sector of the undesirable activities.
She thanked the MEFMI, for initiatives to support its member countries to combat money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation financing.
“Today, the world faces serious threats from the acts of money laundering, financing of terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction perpetrated by individuals or organized criminal syndicates and corporates”, said Mrs. Mhango.
She said the workshop is timely and relevant as it addresses a topical issue.
